Founded in 2007 as M-RETS, the Midwest Renewable Energy Tracking System, and rebranded to CleanCounts in May 2025, the registry now tracks electricity attributes from wind, solar, hydro and nuclear plus a separate fuels registry covering biogas, renewable natural gas and hydrogen. Utilities and corporates use it for state RPS compliance filings and voluntary clean-energy claims, and it was an early mover on hourly granular certificates for 24/7 carbon-free matching. It is structured as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit and explicitly does not trade or broker the certificates it tracks, positioning itself as neutral market infrastructure.
