Vicinity Energy was formed in 2020 when Antin Infrastructure Partners bought Veolia's North American district energy business. It owns and operates 19 district energy systems across 12 cities including Boston, Cambridge, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, Atlanta, Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Trenton, Grand Rapids and Morgantown, serving hospitals, universities and commercial buildings with heating, cooling, sterilization and humidification. Its decarbonization product eSteam replaces fossil combustion with industrial-scale electric boilers and heat pumps; the Boston and Cambridge system alone serves roughly 65 million square feet, and in November 2025 the company began construction of an industrial-scale heat pump complex with DCO Energy and Everllence. Customers include Boston Medical Center, Drexel University, Emerson College and Mercy Medical Center.
