Britain's longest-running demand response aggregator, trading a virtual power plant of more than 1 GW of industrial load, batteries and generation into GB markets.
Founded in 2004 in Edinburgh by Alastair Martin, Flexitricity was first into several GB flexibility markets: the first Frequency Control by Demand Management call in 2012, the first aggregator Capacity Market contract in 2014, and the first product to monetise excess wind via demand turn-up in 2016. Its portfolio passed 1 GW in 2024 and spans BESS, co-located assets and industrial and commercial demand-side response, traded through the Balancing Mechanism, frequency response, reserve, the Capacity Market, DNO flexibility services and NESO's Demand Flexibility Service from a 24/7 control room. Owned by Alpiq from 2014, it later became a Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners company and merged with Velox Power to form the Flexitricity Group; Drax acquired the business in 2026.
