Accela's Civic Platform is the system of record for building permits, inspections, code enforcement and licensing at thousands of US jurisdictions, which makes it the practical bottleneck — or accelerant — for distributed solar interconnection paperwork. It partnered with NREL in 2021 to co-develop the middleware that plugs SolarAPP+ directly into Accela Building, so an installer's SolarAPP+ submission flows back as an auto-filled, auto-approved permit inside the city's existing system. The company has promoted California Energy Commission CalAPP grants to help cities fund the switch. Berkshire Partners acquired Accela in 2017; Francisco Partners made a new investment in September 2023.
