European developer of lead-cooled fast reactors fuelled by MOX made from recycled plutonium and depleted uranium, pairing reactor design with its own fuel fabrication build-out.
Founded in September 2021 by Stefano Buono, Luciano Cinotti and Elisabeth Rizzotti, newcleo acquired Hydromine Nuclear Energy and its LFR-AS-200 (200 MWe) and LFR-TL-30 designs. It has raised over EUR 780M privately and is building a MOX fuel pilot assembly line at Nogent-sur-Seine plus an R&D and training centre at Chusclan in the Gard. It was the first advanced modular reactor accepted into the UK's Generic Design Assessment, though the UK's 2025 decision to immobilise its plutonium stockpile forced newcleo to suspend the UK reactor programme and move its headquarters to Paris; it has a commercialisation JV with Italy's NextChem and was selected for DOE's Surplus Plutonium Utilization Program in May 2026.
